I currently have two main research interests: (1) Animal contest behaviour. I have studied the information gathering abilities of animals during
aggressive encounters. A large part of my experimental work has involved convict cichlid fish, although this work could have practical
welfare related applications. (2) Early life influences. Currently I work on a defra funded project studying how stressors during early
life can compromise animal welfare. This work comprises a cross species review including farmed fish, cattle, sheep, pigs, and poultry.
My current project is funded by Defra. Previously I was funded by the department of agriculture and rural development (DARD) for Northern Ireland.
