Legislation & Guidelines - Codes of Practice
There are now a number quality schemes and codes of practice that make specific references to measures and conditions aimed to promote and safeguard fish welfare. Examples of industry lead codes of practice include the:
Federation of European Aquaculture Producer’s Code of Conduct (FEAP, 2000),
Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation's Code of Good Practice
British Trout Association’s Code of Practice, (BTA, 2002).
Aquaculture Health Joint Working Groups's Welfare Report
The existence of such codes of practice in advance of legislation indicates that industry is aware of the growing importance attached to fish welfare and is prepared to address welfare issues. Although such initiatives are commendable, codes of practice can be viewed by animal welfare pressure groups as being inadequate as they are not legally binding.
