COST 867: Welfare of fish in European aquaculture
COST Action 867 is a European network for fish welfare research. COST actions are organised as an open forum to promote the exchange of ideas and encourage collaboration between partners within the EEC. COST is one of the longest-running instruments supporting co-operation among scientists and researchers across Europe. COST now has 35 member countries and enables scientists to collaborate in a wide spectrum of activities in research and technology.
In addition to meetings, COST supports short Scientific missions (especially for younger researchers) to visit other institutions of the network to conduct small research projects.
In order to formulate fish welfare in its true sense and in a way that it will both be implemented and support the industry, all stakeholder groups need to be involved. The activity is suggested to be organised in three main working areas:
- The biological component of welfare, i.e. the fish itself.
- Operational welfare indicators, i.e. farm level.
- Welfare and management, i.e. synthesis, implementation and formulation of recommendations towards funding, industry and regulatory authorities.
COST 867 will act as a communication platform for the next 5 years on a pan-European level that will support other ongoing fish welfare activities. Further information regarding COST 867 can be found on Fishwelfare.com
